JEFFERSON
vs MASKAEV,
SANDERS vs RAHMAN
HEADLINE HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHT CARD ON
MAY 20 AT BALLY’S PARK PLACE
(ATLANTIC CITY, NJ) –
Bally’s Park Place, in association with promoter Cedric Kushner,
will present a terrific doubleheader fight card featuring a 10-round
bout between Heavyweights Derrick Jefferson and
Oleg Maskaev, and a
12-round WBU Heavyweight title fight as Champion Corrie
Sanders defends his belt against Hasim Rahman. This
card will take place in the main ballroom at Bally’s Park Place in
Atlantic City, NJ on Saturday, May 20, 2000, starting at 8:30 p.m.
On November 6, 1999, Cedric Kushner presented an incredible
heavyweight fight card at Bally’s - Derrick Jefferson’s knockout
win against Maurice Harris was called the “Fight of the Year” by
some observers, while Oleg Maskaev’s surprise knockout win against
Hasim Rahman was every bit as exciting. The winners of those two
spectacular battles will face each other in this main event.
Detroit, Michigan native Derrick Jefferson (22-1-1, 18 KOs) is a
rising star in the heavyweight division – he is an excellent
prospect with tremendous punching power and an exciting style.
He stepped up in class and had his three best wins last year. He
is currently rated WBC #28, and is a former US national amateur
champion.
Oleg
Maskaev’s (19-2, 14 KOs) star is also rising – the Staten Island,
NY native skyrocketed in the world ratings with a series of impressive
wins, including his best last November, an eighth-round knockout
against contender Hasim Rahman. He is rated WBA #7, IBF #10, WBC
#13, and is a former two-time Soviet national amateur champion.
Transvaal,
South Africa native Corrie Sanders (36-1, 26 KOs) will be making his
fourth defense of the WBU title. He has won 13 fights in a row,
spanning nearly six years, including a victory by TKO against former
Cruiserweight world champion Al Cole on February 19. Corrie
scored a knockdown around 30 seconds into the first round, and an
ensuing series of blows caused the referee to stop the fight at 1:03.
Hailing from
Baltimore, Maryland, Hasim “The Rock” Rahman (32-2, 26 KOs ) has a
lot to prove in this fight. He has impressive wins to his credit
over the last few years, but is rebounding from a knockout loss last
November against Oleg Maskaev. He is currently rated WBC #19,
and is a former USBA champion with two successful defenses.
An exciting
program of preliminary bouts will be announced. The featured fights
will be televised live on HBO.
